Questions to ask before choosing a college

If you’re still in the process of making that all-important decision of where you want to go to college, there are plenty of things for you to consider. While everyone from your mom to your next door neighbor will have an opinion about the choice you should make, you have to do what’s right for you. But what if you don’t know where to begin? Start by asking yourself these questions:

Do I want to be near home?

The transition from high school to college can be a difficult one, especially if you’re far from home. While some people can’t wait to move on to their next adventure, others prefer to be close enough to their hometown so they can visit regularly. Location is an important factor to consider when deciding where you want to go to college.

What do I want to study?

If you already know what you want your major to be, and are confident that you won’t change your mind, you’ll want to choose a school with a program that will prepare you for your dream job. Have you always loved working with animals? Then you better make sure the college you choose offers a degree in veterinary assisting.

What’s my financial situation?

Sometimes finances play a larger role in major life decisions than we’d like, but cost is always something you need to consider. Do you plan on renting an apartment or living at home to save money? Are there financial aid or scholarship opportunities available? Keep all of this in mind as you make your final decision.

Would I prefer a large or small college?

Consider what sort of college experience you want: Would you thrive at a large research university where there are hundreds of students in a class? Or would you prefer the individualized attention that comes from pursuing a degree at a smaller college? The answer to these questions may have a larger bearing on your academic success than you realize.
