What Will I Learn

Carrington’s Medical Billing and Coding programs train future medical secretaries the specialized skills and knowledge necessary to perform medical coding and process medical insurance billing and claims within the health care setting.

Class instruction combines theory and practice to meet the competencies needed to be a medical biller and coder. Students learn to accurately interpret medical records and code the information for submission to insurance companies. 

In Carrington College’s degree programs, students also complete a broad base of general education courses focusing on:

  • Computer literacy
  • English writing and composition
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social sciences

Career Opportunities

Medical secretaries and administrative assistants perform routine clerical and administrative duties. Between 2020 and 2030 employment for medical secretaries is expected to grow 11% nationally, which is faster than average for all occupations, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics2.

Employment growth is projected for medical secretaries, primarily due to the growth of the healthcare industry. For example, baby boomers will require more medical services as they age. Medical secretaries will be needed to handle administrative tasks related to billing and insurance processing of Medicare and other claims. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be an additional 64,900 jobs nationally for Medical secretaries and administrative assistants between 2020 and 20302.

How long is school for Medical Billing and Coding?

While the exact length of time to complete a Medical Billing a Coding program will depend on your schedule and the school you attend, students can complete Carrington’s program with a certificate in as few as 9 months or earn an Associate Degree in as few as 16 months.  Program availability varies by location and state of residence.

How do I learn Medical Billing and Coding?

Medical Billing and Coding requires specialized knowledge of the language health insurance carriers and medical professionals use to communicate. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, medical secretaries and administrative assistants need to be familiar with medical terminology and codes, medical records, and hospital or laboratory procedures.3

What classes are required for Medical Billing and Coding?

At Carrington, students in the Medical Billing and Coding program are required to take progressive levels of Medical Billing and Coding Theory and Applications. Students also complete  an externship or capstone project. 

What jobs can I get with a Medical Billing and Coding certificate?

While job titles may vary, some samples of jobs one may be able to get after earning a Medical Billing and Coding certificate include:

  • Medical Secretaries and Administrative Assistants

What certification exams will I be eligible to take upon graduating?

Upon completion of the Medical Billing and Coding program, students will have the opportunity to take the CBCS (Certified Billing and Coding Specialist) and the CEHRS (Certified Electronic Health Record Specialist) exams.

NOTE: Carrington College does not guarantee that graduates will successfully pass these exams or be certified as a result of completing the program.
