Sacramento Pharmacy Technology students show off their skills for GoodDay Sacramento

Carrington College’s Sacramento campus hosted a Compounding Fair yesterday that was featured on GoodDay Sacramento. Students in the Pharmacy Technology program showed off their compounding skills by using raw and organic ingredients to create products including a facial scrub, body butter, deodorant, lip balms as well as a pain-relieving body balm and more.

What is compounding?

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), compounding is generally a practice in which a licensed pharmacist, a licensed physician, or, in the case of an outsourcing facility, a person under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, combines, mixes, or alters ingredients of a drug to create a medication tailored to the needs of an individual patient1. Examples include making a liquid version of a medication normally available in pill form for patients who cannot swallow pills, or reformulating a drug to remove an unwanted, nonessential ingredient like lactose if a patient is allergic to it2.

Students in our Pharmacy Technology program learn compounding skills that they practice in our hands-on lab3. The students featured on GoodDay Sacramento applied the skills they’ve learned so far to make the beauty products shown in the clip below.
