How To Brush a Dog’s Teeth

January 27, 2016

How often should you brush your dog’s teeth? What’s the proper way to do it? Students from Carrington College’s Veterinary Assisting program[1] are demonstrating how to brush a dog’s teeth.

Here’s a list of the products you’ll need:

  • Enzymatic Toothpaste
  • Toothbrush
  • Finger brush (for cats or small breeds)

First, take your pet toothbrush and get it wet. Then apply your toothpaste. Lift the dog’s lips and go on the outside of the teeth that touch the lips and brush for about two minutes. You’ll want to brush daily so the teeth stay clean and healthy.

“The importance of tooth brushing is for the pet’s overall health. There are bacteria that are found in the tartar that can actually affect the heart,” said Mesa Veterinary Assisting Program Director Kelsey White.

It’s all about contact time. Keep the toothpaste on for up to two minutes daily to help your pet’s health.
