With a wealth of seemingly competing advice, it can be difficult to know which diets provide the best health outcomes. The general rule of thumb is to consume more produce while limiting portions — but there are many ways to achieve this, with certain diets or programs offering valuable guidance along the way.

Mediterranean Diet Benefits

The Mediterranean diet encompasses a variety of cultural traditions and, as a result, can manifest in numerous ways. It draws inspiration from the nutritional practices prevalent in many Mediterranean nations. In general, however, this term is used to describe a diet that emphasizes produce and olive oil, although poultry and seafood may also be consumed in significant amounts, along with beans, nuts, or seeds.[4]

DASH Diet for Hypertension

If you have high blood pressure, you can look beyond the usual beta-blockers and ACE inhibitors for a solution. Lifestyle factors play a significant role in determining blood pressure. With a targeted diet, you can achieve dramatic improvements.

A great option? DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension). This diet primarily emphasizes produce but also allows for certain dairy products, along with fish, poultry, beans, and nuts. Under this plan, high-fat meats and dairy should be minimized, as should sweets.[5]

Lean into available resources when possible, using, for example, support systems to reinforce healthy eating habits or even tech-driven solutions to provide motivation or to help with tracking.

While diets emphasizing whole foods or limited sugar can provide an overall health boost, some people may need to take a more targeted approach to account for current conditions. These restricted diets should only be pursued with guidance from trusted healthcare professionals.

This is largely achieved by limiting sugar consumption, although, as mentioned previously, a high-fiber diet can also promote stability. Sometimes referred to as a “renal diet,” a kidney-friendly approach limits sodium, potassium, and phosphorus.
