Let’s face it – the idea of getting up at 5 a.m. to run in place at the gym for two hours before class isn’t particularly appealing to most people. However, it’s important for students to stay fit and healthy, even if they’ve never set foot in a gym in their life. With a little imagination and the help of some enterprising student clubs, there’s more than one way to stay in shape and have a good time while you’re at it.
Capoeira
OK, so this might sound more like a happy hour cocktail than a martial art, but when it comes to a solid workout and a great way to stay trim, capoeira is hard to beat. Originally a form of Brazilian street combat, capoeira incorporates strong elements of dance and music that’s unlike any other martial art in the world. Once, capoeira was unheard of in the U.S., but today, many universities offer capoeira clubs. Don’t worry if you’re not as limber as you used to be – the basics of capoeira can be learned by just about anyone. Although this unique form of physical exercise has roots in martial arts, most clubs focus on the rhythmic features of capoeira, as opposed to the combat aspects. “Capoeira’s a great workout,” Will Milne, a fifth-year electrical engineering major, told The Technique. “You sweat and move all sorts of new ways.”
Broga
These days, a rolled-up yoga mat is a common accessory for many college students. However, some male students might find a traditional yoga class intimidating. That’s why Adam O’Neill came up with the concept of “broga,” or yoga classes specifically for men. “A lot of guys come here after years and years of sports, but their bodies are out of whack. Some have cement shoulders or really tight hips,” Robert Sidoti, broga’s co-founder and instructor, told College News. “The class focuses on balance, building strength and an awareness of breath.”
Rock climbing
Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and tackle the sheer face of a rock wall at your local gym. You don’t need to have years experience to enjoy rock climbing, and many colleges have dedicated equipment and facilities for fellow rockhoppers. Rock climbing is an excellent way to work on your upper body strength, tone your core and have a great time without the grind of the gym.
