In October of 2023, we interviewed Kai as she was about to graduate in two months from the Medical Billing and Coding program. Faith and Focus: Student Kai Alberson Gets the Job Done | Carrington College. She thought it would be challenging to get a job in medical billing right out the gate, but she was focused and determined. She decided the smartest route would be to accept an entry-level job as a Care Team Specialist in the company of her choice, Giving Home Healthcare in Las Vegas. As Amy Creed, her career advisor, said at the time, “I wish all my students were this responsive and focused!”
Now it is June 2025 and Kai has been promoted twice since she began working at Giving Home Healthcare. She currently holds title Lead Billing Coordinator, and she leads two out of nine teams of Billing Coordinators. Each Billing Coordinator has about 60-70 patients in a case load and each patient has up to an estimated 10 caregivers per patient. She oversees the payroll operations for these caregivers as well as four employees. She not only ensures the caregivers are paid, she is also responsible for submitting documents to the Department of Labor. A very busy job, but she loves it and wouldn’t have it any other way. She is a great example to future Medical Billing and Coding students; how one can progress beyond the entry level into the career they want. But most importantly, she says, is not only that you have to love what you do to get ahead, but you must keep a positive attitude as you meet the challenges.
What do you love most about your new job?
I love organizing and planning. I enjoy what I do and the benefits of my work taking care of patients. I also love being part of a new team. I have already built rapport with my team because I was Billing Coordinator for them for almost a year before this position started. We as a team have been doing a great job, working well to build a good support system.
So, what’s the most important advice you can give to graduates?
Attitude is everything, even if you don’t know exactly what you want to do the first time out of school. You can’t stay stagnant. You have to have an open mind, you need to have the will to do your best whatever it is; no matter how large or small you think your role is, you need to show integrity. It’s no different in whatever field you choose – even if you work in a fast-food restaurant. You must have the mindset that you want to succeed regardless of what it is.
How did Carrington College prepare you for opportunities in Medical Billing?
The program really prepared me by teaching me self-discipline: just showing up at school every day to do the work through the good and bad days – I always show up no matter what. We’re all human and we make mistakes, but I will do my best to be an example for my team. Carrington also taught me how to maintain deadlines – which is a majority of my job now! It really prepared me for that.
The last time we spoke, you said you wanted to be a good example for your daughter? How is she doing?
She’s twelve now and just finished the sixth grade. She’s doing really well; she has joined cheerleading and swimming, and she received a math award this year. They gave her a medal and a certificate. We’re still living with her grandmother, who takes care of her sometimes.
You must be proud. Sounds like she is taking after her mom.
Thank you. I hope so.
