There’s An App For That!

Mobile AppsJust a couple of years ago the phrase ‘there’s an app for that’ was said almost jokingly, mocking the increasing proliferation of applications that could help you do pretty much anything…as long as you had a smart phone. Now with the advent of tablets, increasingly sophisticated smart phone technology, and the literally millions of applications out there, if you can think of anything there probably is ‘an app for that’. As we head into the new year why not consider downloading some free and low-cost apps that could help make your student life a little easier. Here are nine that we’ve found (not available on all platforms!) but there are so many more…! Dropbox: Dropbox is a free service that lets you access all your docs, photos, even videos anywhere! Any file you save to your Dropbox is accessible from your computer and smart devices. Create shared folders and synchronize your work between them; no matter where you are, your files will never be far away. Evernote: A New York Times ‘Top 10 Must Have App’, Evernote is easy to use and helps you remember everything across all the devices you use. Stay organized, save your ideas and improve your productivity. Evernote lets you take notes, capture photos, create to-do lists, record voice-reminders, and it makes these notes completely searchable whether you’re at home, at school or on the go. Droid Scan: Ever find yourself wishing you could scan an important document when you’re on the go? Droid Scan functions as a scanner in the palm of your hand, enabling you to create high-resolution scans of just about anything before converting them into a PDF file. Notability: It’s all well and good scanning pages from newspapers, textbooks and other print media, but what happens if you want to make notes on these documents? That’s where Notability comes in. This handy app allows you to annotate PDF documents right on your phone. In addition to written notes, you can also create links to web pages and even audio notes. Studious: This app provides you with helpful reminders for things like homework due dates, exams and more. Best of all, if you enter your class schedule into the app, it’ll automatically silence your device while you’re in class. Mint: Working on a budget? Who isn’t? Mint helps you to manage your accounts — checking, savings, credit cards — in one place. You can automatically add and categorize your transactions, all within the app. StudyBlue Flashcards: Flashcards are still one of the most popular memory aids. But paper flashcards are so 2005… StudyBlue has thousands of flashcards already loaded. Unlike old school flashcards, you can set reminders on the app so you can maintain a study schedule before a big test. Trello: Working in a group? Trello can help organize an entire project, large or small, by assigning each person a label and filtering responsibilities to that individual through the app. Create deadlines, assign tasks, and even collaborate in real time, as changes that are made in the app are instantly updated. SkypeTM: Traditionally a software app that allows you to make free voice calls to one another, Skype has a group video chat service that’s being used by professors and students to engage in classroom or group discussions. Plus you can use it to catch up with family or friends you may have been neglecting!
