Graduate Spotlight – Meet Makay Oberly

Makay Oberly Makay is our spotlight graduate this month; Makay graduated from the Veterinary Assisting certificate program at our Mesa, AZ campus in April this year. Makay grew up in Mesa, and now lives in Gilbert, but will soon be moving out of state to continue her education. “I’m working at PetSmart right now; I’ve had a lot of job offers since I graduated but I haven’t taken any of them because I decided I want to take my education to the next level. I’m moving to Utah to study Veterinary Technology; I’ve got this qualification out of the way, so I want to take the next step.” After graduating high school, Makay decided that she wanted to work for a year to save some money for school. Her sister-in-law had studied Massage Therapy at our Mesa campus and she recommended Carrington College because of our Veterinary Assisting program. “She knew that I wanted to work with animals, so after she mentioned the program to me, I came in and talked with an Enrollment Representative, and he really got me interested.” Makay thanks her brother for her early interest in animal care; “We all worked at the same animal clinic when we were younger. I was just a Kennel Assistant, but it was a good experience, and I just loved working with animals.  Growing up we had a lot of animals at home; dogs, cats, birds, turtles, fish! We seemed to have 2 of everything – I felt like I was on Noah’s Ark!” Makay would encourage prospective students looking for Veterinary Assisting schools to consider Carrington College; she really enjoyed the way our faculty teaches the program. “It isn’t just book work in a classroom here, it’s actual hands-on experience – I just loved it!  I can’t learn just from reading a book; I have to visually see, and physically do the activity to learn – and that’s what they do here.” Although she grew up in Mesa, Makay didn’t know anyone on her first day at our Carrington College Mesa campus, but by the time she left she had a whole classroom of friends. “It was fun! – It’s really awesome to experience the hands-on stuff with other people. You just help each other along, and that’s great because that’s exactly how it is in the field.” Thanks for volunteering to be in our spotlight Makay, and good luck with the move to Utah!
