Study tips for the pharmacy tech certification exam

September 17, 2013

Use these tips to study for your pharmacy technician certification exam.As you near the end of pharmacy technology school, you are no doubt beginning the process of studying for the pharmacy technician certification exam administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. While earning your certification isn’t required in all states, it will improve your ability to find a job.1 After you’ve signed up for the PTCB exam, use these study tips for success:

Create a schedule

When you have a large exam looming, it can be tempting to procrastinate studying. However, if you want to pass the certification exam, the best thing you can do is give yourself plenty of time to review material so that you don’t become overwhelmed. Creating a study schedule is an effective means of making sure you have enough time to prepare and don’t end up cramming in the week before the exam. Set aside an hour or so each day to study, and you’ll be fully prepared come exam time.2

Make a study guide

After determining how long it will take you to prepare for the pharmacy technician certification examination, it’s time to figure out what exactly you need to study. You can purchase “Certification Exam Review for the Pharmacy Technician” by Mike Johnston on the National Pharmacy Technician Association website if you’re looking for a ready-made study guide. You may also want to create an outline of material you need to cover while studying using class syllabuses and textbooks.3

Take practice tests

Taking practice tests offered by the PTCB will not only help you determine where your strengths and weaknesses lie, but they can also give you a feel for what the test will look like and may even relieve some of that pre-exam anxiety. After taking the practice test, pinpoint areas where your scores could be improved and devote more time to studying those particular topics.4
