Be The Reason Someone Smiles Today

December 3, 2013

SmileThe Holiday Season is in full swing; we’re told this is the time of year to be generous in our giving with kindness in our hearts. Well that’s a wonderful sentiment, but as much as we’d all like to, not everyone has the financial capacity for giving, or the spare time for volunteering.

BUT – and this is a big but – this Holiday season you could make someone’s day with a simple, random act of kindness that could cost you nothing, or very little, in terms of time or money. I guarantee that doing something good for another person, without the expectation of anything in return, will make that person smile and will make you feel good!

I believe that Carrington College California students are caring, kind-hearted folks by nature – after all, just look at the caring professions you’ve chosen. So for most of you the challenge I’m throwing down should be easy to achieve!

Try to do 10 random acts of kindness before the winter break!

  • Unexpectedly hug a loved one and tell them you love them – at first they might think you’ve done something wrong if it’s not a common occurrence, but that will make it all the more special.
  • If it’s busy on the bus, BART or train, why not give up your seat to someone who needs it more than you?
  • Be polite and hold the door open for the person behind you; it’s amazing how many people just let the door slam in a person’s face.
  • Say thank you properly – why not write a heartfelt thank you note to someone who helped you, or even better – write it to their boss or manager?
  • Buy one Give one Free – This month if you come across a ‘buy one get one free’ promotion at your grocery store, donate the free one to a local food bank just before Christmas.
  • If you see someone in your class who’s having a hard time with a problem or subject you’ve mastered, why not help them study and give them a few tips.
  • Pick up trash when you see it – it just doesn’t matter who dropped it, that simple act will help make your street, neighborhood, or school a more pleasant environment for everyone.
  • Raise a soldier’s spirits and make a friend by adopting a soldier as a pen pal. Showing your encouragement and gratitude for the hard work they do will be appreciated.
  • The next time you hear about a blood drive on campus, make the decision to go and give blood.
  • Waiting in line makes us irritable and impatient, especially while driving. Take a breath, smile and let that car go in front of you when they need to change lanes or make a turn.

These are just ten ideas; you can always come up with more appropriate ones for yourself. My challenge is for you to do just ten, any ten, before our winter break. But why stop there? Not only do kind actions brighten the day of the person on the receiving end, but they benefit the giver too – make it a way of life. Share your random acts of kindness using #CarringtonCares.
