How to choose the perfect college major
After making the all-important decision of which college to attend, students are often abruptly confronted with another crucial choice: what should you major in? With so many options and such a bearing on your future career, it can easily become an overwhelming decision. If you have no idea where to start, follow these tips and you’ll be well on your way:
1. Think about your goals
Envision what you want your life to be like after college: What are your goals? Do you want to join the Peace Corps? Land a great job? Would you rather live in a rural or urban area? Choosing a major is the first step in planning the rest of your life, so your post-graduation goals are important to consider. Make a list of what you want to accomplish, and see how it fits different careers.
2. Consider your passions
If you have a passion for something, chances are it would allow you to have a long and happy career. Think about what you like to do in your spare time outside of school: Do you enjoy working with animals? Perhaps a degree in veterinary assisting is right for you. If you love what you do, it won’t feel like work.
3. Allow yourself to be curious
If you don’t have a clear idea of what you want your major to be, don’t be afraid to explore multiple fields of study. Schedule time to talk with an academic advisor about everything your college has to offer, and see if they provide any career assessments or tests that may help you narrow your search.
4. Play to your strengths
Consider a major where you excel academically rather than one that just looks good on your resume. You’re much more likely to get a quality job if you have career experience and a great GPA to go along with it.
