The Spring 2015 Commencement Ceremony for the Carrington College Tucson campus was a wonderful occasion for the 157 students who received their certificates. But it was equally memorable for the more than 1,200 students’ family members and friends who attended the ceremony at Centennial Hall on the University of Arizona campus on May 8th.
Dena O’Donnell, campus Administrative Coordinator, sang the National Anthem. Her stirring performance was met with thunderous applause before the crowd was addressed by two student speakers nominated by faculty; Constantine St. Augustine (Pharmacy Technology) and Vivian Hendricks (Medical Assisting).
Dr. Natasha Bryant, Dean of Academic Affairs, said of Constantine’s selection and program completion; “His achievement is particularly notable because he was a three-time re-entry student; he overcame a number of personal challenges and graduated as president of his class and was recognized as a leader on campus. Vivian’s speech also shared a powerful testimony about the importance of family, and the motivation they can provide for students.”
The Commencement speaker was Mr. Tony Penn, President & CEO – United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona; and Chairman of the Board – Tucson Metro Chamber.
A special mention for three well known sisters on campus; Kimbriona, Mishannee, and Ra’Ona Gilliam walked the stage and took a group photo with campus Executive Director, Dr. Tina Diggs, to celebrate their wonderful accomplishment as a family!
Another mention to two special graduates of the Health Studies program; faculty members Jen Bohne, Dental Assisting program director, and Ivan Grijalva, full-time Dental Assisting instructor, were conferred with their Associate of Science degree by Dr. Bryant.
Student Council Members were also recognized by the audience for their participation and achievements, which included attending at least ten student council meetings, hosting student events on & off campus, and participating in at least three volunteer events in the community.
A brilliant day concluded with a memorable sight! Dr. Diggs, Dr. Bryant and a number of program directors on stage dancing to Kool & the Gang’s song “Celebration” as students and their guests processed out of the hall.
