Carrington College Educates Local Media About All Things Billing, Coding and ICD-10

December 29, 2015

We know ICD-10 like the back of our hand, and we’re helping local media learn all about it.

With the holidays here, it’s not uncommon to eat one too many bread rolls, side dishes or slices of pumpkin pie and wake up from your turkey coma with a bit of a tummy ache. If the pain is bad enough to go to the doctor or hospital, you may get “coded” for over eating. Yes, there’s a code for that.

It’s also not uncommon to spend the day after Thanksgiving (aka Black Friday) scouring the shelves for this season’s hottest tech device or toy. If you happen to get into a fight with another eager shopper and end up with an injury, there’s a code for that too!

As you may already know from this prior post, every medical procedure, diagnosis and treatment you’ve ever had has been coded (the way doctors’ offices and hospitals track why they see patients and the diagnoses). These codes haven’t changed much in 35 years.

This coding system, otherwise known as ICD, which is short for International Classification of Diseases, took on a shiny brand new version (including all the codes for your holiday happenings) starting on October 1, 2015.

Carrington College’s team of Medical Billing & Coding rock stars across our campuses have been ahead of the curve, learning this new system for well over a year. That’s right, Carrington students already have a one-up for the new codes now found at a healthcare provider near you.

Because of our stellar knowledge of this new system, the local media has called upon us to serve as media resources on the topic. And we’ve been thrilled to oblige!

Our Medical Billing & Coding team has given several interviews to print, broadcast and online media over the past couple of months to help local communities understand what those codes mean, and how they can benefit patients. We’ve become the media expert on all things billing and coding.

Most recently, KPNX 12 News reporter Stacia Naquin brought our Phoenix North campus Medical Billing & Coding program director, Linda Bingham, to her station to teach the ins and outs of ICD-10 to her “12 News Call to Action” team. 12 News Call to Action is the station’s consumer advocacy program where volunteers answer viewers calls about a variety of different topics.  According to Stacia, medical billing is one the more popular calls and she was thrilled that Linda was able to share her knowledge with the nearly 40 volunteers in the program.

Linda shared some of the most popular codes, as well as the codes for common, yet hilarious holiday mishaps with the Call to Action volunteers.

And take a look at some of the great media coverage regarding ICD-10.  Thanks to Linda and our other medical billing and coding directors for being a part of these successful story placements:
