December 3, 2013

If you want to help people, think about pursuing one of these careers. If your goal in life is to make a difference in the world, then you’ll want to find a career that allows you to help others. From nonprofits to health care, there are plenty of job opportunities that enable you to serve members of the community, you just need to know where to begin. Of course you can always volunteer on the side, but wouldn’t you love to have a career that revolves around making the world a better place?

If you have always enjoyed working with kids, then becoming a public school teacher can be great way to give back to your community. While you may have heard that teachers are losing their jobs due to budget cuts, school districts are always looking to hire people who specialize in science, math or special education. In addition, learning to speak Spanish could help you find a job in areas with large Hispanic populations. The salary of public school teachers varies by district and may depend on tenure.1

Whether you complete a registered nursing program, you will be on the front lines of patient care. Nurses are relied on to administer medicines and treatments to patients, operate and monitor medical equipment, and set up plans for patient care, among other duties. As a nurse, your ability to be compassionate and patient will really shine through and be truly appreciated by those who are ill or injured.2

Social worker

Social workers dedicate their lives to improving the lives of others. If you choose a career as a direct-service social worker, you will spend your time helping people solve and cope with problems that they face in their everyday lives. Social workers provide people in need access to resources they may not otherwise be aware of and help clients adjust to major changes in their lives. You may also occasionally need to respond to crisis situations, such as child abuse.3

Firefighters spend their days protecting the public, whether they are putting out flames in a residential home or battling forest fires in California. At the scene of an emergency or accident, the fire department is generally among the first responders. You will need to be physically fit and have a great deal of courage in order to do this job effectively. Perhaps most importantly, however, firefighters need to know how to work as a team in order to help people out of dangerous situations as quickly as possible.4
