Chicago following national trends, hiring more college grads
Who's hiring these days? According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, the hiring rate for 2012 is expected to increase by 10.2 percent compared to last year, and in Chicago, suburban companies are setting their sights on fresh grads.
"The economy here in the Chicago area is diverse and gives graduates a wide swath of companies to look at," John Challenger, a principal of a global outplacement firm in Chicago, told the Daily Herald. "Chicago is a magnet for the most talented students from around the Midwest."
State Farm Insurance is among the many Chicagoan companies hiring recent graduates, reportedly employing about 70 more college degree holders than last year. Most of the openings are for entry-level jobs where employers have seen recent growth, like social media marketing. Numerous industry experts agree that small businesses and large corporations benefit from online social media aggregates such as Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest, and recent college grads are viewed as the key to providing trend-based feedback.
Why not use your hours of perusing the web as a resume builder? Do you write a blog? Chances are, employers are looking for youthful minds to fill in their social media gaps.
