Successful completion of our Certificate program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography prepares you to perform the duties expected in an entry-level position. Sometimes referred to as ultrasound technicians, medical sonographers utilize advanced equipment that processes sound waves to generate images for medical assessment. You can learn how to obtain images to help diagnose, monitor and assess an increasingly wide array of conditions, such as heart disease, breast cancer and abnormalities in the abdomen.
The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at Carrington College® can help you build the technical skills and analytic capabilities you’ll need to pursue an entry-level position as a medical sonographer. This program provides:

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of diagnostic medical sonographers is expected to increase by about 44% through 2020.* Demand for those trained to perform diagnostic imaging should continue to grow as the population continues to age. From physicians’ offices and imaging outpatient clinics to major medical centers and research facilities, medical sonography is a career that can lead you to a position in a variety of healthcare environments. Plus, once you have experience in the field, you can pursue opportunities in education, administration or working for manufacturers of ultrasound equipment in roles such as sales and system implementation.
Four semesters designed to prepare you for a fulfilling new career
The Diagnostic Medical Sonography training program at Carrington College is divided into four semesters. During the first two semesters, you will attend classes and lab sessions on campus as you acquire a sound knowledge base on topics including human anatomy, physics, computers, patient care and disease pathology. You will also become familiar with the specialized equipment used in the field and begin learning the skills you’ll need to progress through the second semester. Semesters three and four will take you off campus and into actual healthcare settings for your clinical preceptorship training.
Once you complete your Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at Carrington College, you should possess the knowledge and the skills necessary to:
- Perform sonography according to current protocols and guidelines established by the industry
- Produce images of organs, tissues and blood flow inside the body
- Take measurements, calculate values and analyze results in order to offer preliminary findings to physicians
- Communicate with patients and colleagues in a professional manner
Admission requirements
To enter our Diagnostic Medical Sonography program, you must already have earned your Associate degree in an allied health field that requires a clinical externship, such as Medical Assisting or Respiratory Care. You may also enter this program if you have earned a Bachelor’s degree in any major field of study. While there are programs in diagnostic medical sonography at other schools that do not have these same admission requirements, students who complete those programs are often left on their own to pursue the additional training necessary to qualify for registration.
