Surgical technologists are members of operating room teams; they assist in surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel. The Carrington College California Surgical Technology associate degree program includes the academic and clinical instruction necessary to perform the duties of a surgical technologist in hospital operating rooms, surgery centers, delivery rooms, birthing centers, casting rooms, emergency rooms, and ambulatory care areas.

Surgical technologists require a high level of training and competency. The Carrington College California Surgical Technology certificate or associate degree comprises the study of microbiology, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, surgical procedures, instrumentation and techniques, preoperative and postoperative routines, and care of surgical patients. Prior to surgery, surgical technologists help set up instruments, equipment, and sterile drapes in the operating room. They get patients ready by preparing incision sites and help the surgical team put on sterile gowns and gloves. During surgery, technologists pass instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and surgical assistants, and help prepare specimens for laboratory analysis.
