How to write a great objective statement

As you craft your resume, be sure to write a strong objective statement. As you craft your resume to apply for your first dental or medical assisting position, you may want to consider including an objective statement at the top. While it’s fallen out of fashion in recent years, the inclusion of an objective statement can be beneficial for people who are seeking entry-level positions and want to show their ambition and passion for the field by highlighting their career goals.1 Write one that will help your resume stand out from the crowd:

Keep it specific

If you’re applying to dozens of jobs, you may be tempted to construct a more generic statement that can apply to any position within the industry. However, this is a mistake. The statement should reflect your motivation and qualifications for each individual job, which means it should be tweaked and tailored to each listing. The more specific you are, the better.2

Include important information

The information that you include in your objective statement should clearly state the direction in which you wish to take your career (not that you want this job so you can pay off your student loans). State the position for which you are applying, what you hope to accomplish and the skills you intend to use if hired. Even though you are including all of this information, make sure it is concise Рyour statement should only be one to two sentences long.3

Keep the employer mind

Objective statements can be tricky because you have to find a way to focus on the employer, even though you are writing about yourself. The key is to word your statement in a way that clearly indicates how you would benefit the employer, not the other way around. Keep preferences about work environment or salary out of it.4
