Would you be a good pharmacy technician?

Would you make a good pharmacy technician? If you are thinking about a career in pharmacy technology, it’s important to understand that the job requires more than simply counting tablets and packaging and labeling prescriptions.1 Being a pharmacy technician also requires the ability to give good customer service, even when you’re in a bad mood or feeling stressed.2 Think you have what it takes to be a great pharmacy technician? You’ll need to possess these qualities:

1. Organized

After earning a pharmacy technician degree and beginning your work in a pharmacy or drugstore, you will be required to juggle multiple job duties each day, including taking and filling prescriptions, answering phones and preparing medications. In order to do your job well, you will need to keep organized to ensure that both the pharmacist and customers are satisfied with your work. In addition, it is imperative that prescriptions are filled properly, and being organized will help you complete this task.3

2. Efficient

For some patients, having an efficiently filled prescription can be the difference between life and death (or, at least, a great deal of pain). Pharmacy technicians must be efficient and complete their work in a detailed manner – its imperative that prescriptions are always filled correctly the first time to prevent potentially harmful side effects, which can result from giving patients the wrong prescription or dispensing medications incorrectly.4

3. Friendly

One of the main duties of pharmacy technicians is to take down the information needed to fill a prescription from customers or health care professionals, and to then give patients their prescriptions after they have consulted with the pharmacist. Both your supervisors and customers will appreciate interacting with someone who is friendly and has a good attitude. Being courteous can go a long way toward helping your career.5
