As you prepare to graduate from college and begin your career, it may be tempting to only apply for jobs at large, well-known companies. Although the prospect of paid vacation days and a large salary may be enticing, expanding your search to small businesses and startups could help you land a job that blossoms into an innovative and rewarding career.

According to a study conducted by the University of Missouri, the recent economic recession actually led to an increase in entrepreneurial activity. Consider the benefits of working for a startup as you begin your post-graduation job search:

1. Influence

Because startups have fewer employees than large corporations, it’s likely that you’ll be able to have more influence on the direction of the company, as well as your general job description. Working for a startup also means your accomplishments are more likely to be recognized.

2. Responsibility

Being part of a startup’s small team means you are likely the only person with a specific skill set at that company and therefore have greater responsibilities than you would in an entry-level position at a large company. Taking on responsibility can help you become more productive and reliable and have a greater personal investment in your career.

3. Innovation

Startups have to be innovative in order to survive, which means their employees must learn that skill as well. Placing an emphasis on innovation will push you to think creatively and likely allow you greater freedom and flexibility in how you approach your work. Innovation also means constantly being driven to make the most out of your time in the office.

4. Diversity

Working as a part of a small team will give you more diversity in your workday. Because every day presents new challenges, you’ll be less likely to get stuck in the 9-to-5 rut. Working for a startup also allows you to help with tasks in all different areas of the company and explore how your skills can help the business thrive.

5. Values

Startups foster unique skills in their employees that are hard to come by in large companies. You will learn to be frugal, which is a skill that can be applied to all aspects of your life, and will find that hard work and creative thinking are extremely valuable when working to be successful both in work and in life.
