Where to find state dental assisting requirements

Check these websites to see the dental assisting requirements in your state. If you are nearing the end of dental assistant school, it’s time to start thinking about finding employment. Like any health care career, the requirements to become a dental assistant change from year to year as new discoveries and regulations are made. In addition, requirements for becoming a dental assistant may vary between states.1 Here are three places you can go (in addition to your school) to make sure that you’ve met all the requirements for being a dental assistant:

1. Dental Assisting National Board

Founded in 1948, the Dental Assisting National Board is the major national certification board for dental assistants. Currently, there are approximately 35,000 dental assistants that are DANB-certified nationwide. The DANB has an easy-to-navigate website that allows you to search for dental assisting requirements by state. Simply select the state where you wish to work from the drop-down menu, and the DANB will tell you the prerequisites for each level of dental assisting and whether or not there are any additional radiography requirements.2

2. The DALE Foundation

The DALE Foundation was created to provide valuable online educational tools and resources to help all members of the dental team, including dental assistants. On the foundation’s website, you can find the most up-to-date licensing, testing and renewal requirements for dental assistants in each state. Like the DANB, The DALE Foundation will tell you what you need to accomplish to become a dental assistant in each state, and whether or not there are additional radiography requirements.3

3. State dental board websites

If you know precisely which state in which you wish to work and don’t feel the need to explore the requirements of others, you can always visit your state’s dental board website to get the latest information. These websites will also generally have the forms you need to complete to meet that particular state’s dental assisting requirements.4
