Medical administrative assistants are an important part of any medical practice, in fact might be the first person you’ll meet when you go to the doctor’s office! So what’s the Medical Administrative Assistant (MAA) program 1 like at Carrington College? We spoke with a few MAA students and faculty to find out.

What does a medical administrative assistant do?

Medical administrative assistants answer phones, schedule appointments, maintain and update medical records and help keep patient data secure. Medical Administrative Assistant Program Director, Linda Bingham says, “They’re the first person that you’ll see in the office. They’ll check you in, they’ll schedule your appointments either for the doctor or the hospital.”

What will I learn on the MAA program?

You’ll get the classroom education and hands-on, real-world experience you need to become an essential member of the medical office team. This is what these Carrington students have learned so far:

“We’ve gone through the history of medicine, how it all started” explained MAA student Carissa.

“Right now we’re learning anatomy, I mean it’s hard…but it’s also fun!” said student Jessica.

Medical Administrative Assistant program student Brion added – “Some of the basics that we went over include how to connect with patients and to be HIPAA compliant.”

What does HIPAA Compliant mean?

HIPAA is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. That law sets the standard for how healthcare transactions are processed and secured electronically, and that’s an important piece of what MAA students will learn in the program. Keeping our personal medical information secure is really important.

“HIPAA is how a practice takes care of your data – how they protect it. The password issuing, the encryption that you have to do for all your data that you send back and forth from patients…so it’s very important,” explained Linda.

What advice do our students have if you’re considering this program?

“Do it! I didn’t think I could do it! I was 27 weeks pregnant when I started classes. Everybody is really supportive – students, staff, instructors, everybody,” said student Carissa.

“I’m the only one in my family that’s in college right now. I want to make a career out of it, and I want to be an example for other people,” said Jessica.

“We want you to be successful, we want you to leave here with the skills that you’re going to need to land a career and a good job. Do something that you love!” said Linda.
