On Wednesday, Feb 23, 2011, fifty Carrington College – Mesa Dental Hygiene students attended the Capitol Day at the Arizona State Capitol building and complex.  Carrington College was well represented, and definitely was a presence at the statewide assembly of dental hygiene students.

Capitol Day is the opportunity for dental hygiene students to observe and participate in the legislative process, meet the ASDHA 1 (Arizona State Dental Hygienists’ Association) lobbyists, and legislators. Steve Urie, of Arizona District 22, met with our students and talked to them about the bills before Arizona State Legislature that will affect their future. The group had a tour of the Capitol Buildings, and was able to sit in on senate meetings. Carrington College students also learned of the legal issues concerning dental hygienists’ with real world leaning and ties into the course on ethics and jurisprudence.

Our students came away with a better understanding of the role of the professional organization, and the changes in direction the profession may be facing.
